Court Orders Remand of Miyetti Allah Leader, Sets May 27 for Trial

The Federal High Court in Abuja has directed the remand of Bello Bodejo, the leader of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore group, into the custody of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). This decision was made following Bodejo’s arraignment before Justice Inyang Ekwo on Friday.

Bodejo’s arrest, which occurred on January 23 at the Miyetti Allah’s office in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, stemmed from the establishment of a vigilante group. The Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), subsequently filed a motion ex parte on February 5, seeking Bodejo’s remand pending the conclusion of investigations and his court appearance.

Upon expiration of the order, Justice Ekwo instructed the DIA to either arraign Bodejo or grant him bail. However, Bodejo was brought to court by heavily armed personnel of the service.

The Federal Government, in a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CR/141/2024, has leveled three counts of terrorism against Bodejo, accusing him of setting up the group without authorization. Bodejo, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, faces allegations of engaging in activities prejudicial to national security and providing material assistance to a group of men, totaling 1,000.

During the proceedings, Mohammed Abubakar, counsel for the Federal Government, expressed readiness for trial and indicated the prosecution’s intention to call two witnesses, with the possibility of more if necessary. Meanwhile, Mohammed Sheriff, representing the defendant, challenged the competence of the charges, citing amendments made without court approval.

In ruling on the bail application, Justice Ekwo ordered Bodejo’s continued remand in DIA custody. Additionally, he directed the DIA to ensure Bodejo receives necessary medical attention and permitted ten members of his family to attend court proceedings.

The case has been adjourned until May 27 for the commencement of the trial, as determined by Justice Ekwo.
