Court Dismisses Adultery Case Against Jigawa Commissioner Over Lack of Evidence
An Upper Shari’a Court in Kofar Kudu, Kano State, has dismissed an adultery case against Auwal Danladi Sankara, Jigawa State Commissioner of Special Duties, citing insufficient evidence and the absence of the complainant to challenge police findings.
The case, filed by Nasiru Buba, accused Mr. Sankara of engaging in an extramarital affair with his wife, Tasleem Baba Nabegu. Following the complaint, the Kano State Hisbah Board detained Mr. Sankara, sparking widespread attention.
However, during the court hearing, presiding judge Ibrahim Sarki-Yola ruled that investigations conducted by the office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) found no proof of the alleged affair.
“Based on the AIG’s findings, there is no evidence to support the claim of any illicit relationship between Mr. Sankara and Tasleem Baba Nabegu,” the judge stated.
The court also noted the absence of Mr. Buba and his legal representatives to contest the police report. Judge Sarki-Yola emphasized the importance of thorough and careful investigations in such cases, particularly when they involve high-profile individuals.
“Since the complainant failed to appear to challenge the findings, the court has no option but to strike out the case,” he concluded.
Reacting to the ruling, Mr. Sankara’s counsel, Sadam Suleiman, expressed satisfaction, reiterating his client’s innocence. “The court’s decision validates what we have always maintained—that our client is innocent,” Mr. Suleiman said.
In contrast, Rabiu Shu’aibu, counsel for Tasleem Baba Nabegu, hinted at the possibility of pursuing legal action against Mr. Buba for defamation. “We will consult with our client to explore filing a defamation suit against Mr. Buba for tarnishing her reputation,” he said.
