Couples who have regular sex are likely to live longer – Health Expert
A medical expert has highlighted the link between regular sexual activity and a longer lifespan, emphasizing its numerous health benefits. Consultant family physician Dr. Adesida Adewumi shared his insights in an interview on Tuesday in Abuja, explaining that frequent sexual activity contributes to overall well-being, including improved immunity, better sleep, and reduced stress.
Dr. Adewumi pointed out that regular sex can help lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, and alleviate pain such as headaches and body aches. He also highlighted its role in cancer prevention, noting that frequent ejaculation in men—at least 21 times per month—can significantly reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Similarly, women who engage in regular sexual activity may experience a reduced risk of breast cancer. Additionally, he noted that sex functions as a form of exercise, aiding in calorie burning and helping individuals manage their weight.
Beyond physical health, Dr. Adewumi stressed the psychological benefits of regular sexual activity, such as lower risks of depression and anxiety, enhanced brain function, and improved productivity. He explained that sexual intimacy strengthens emotional bonds, reduces loneliness, and fosters better communication between partners.
For pregnant women, he suggested that regular sex could contribute to an easier labor process and quicker postpartum recovery. Women who engage in sexual activity before their menstrual cycles may also experience relief from cramps.
Dr. Adewumi cautioned, however, that the benefits of sex are best realized within the context of a committed, monogamous relationship, which helps prevent sexually transmitted infections such as HIV, herpes, and hepatitis. He emphasized that maintaining a healthy sexual life with a dedicated partner promotes both physical and emotional well-being.
