Cooking Gas Prices Soar to N1,200 Per Kg Amidst Supply Disruption

Cooking gas prices in Nigeria have surged to N1,200 per kilogram, causing widespread concern among citizens. This price hike is primarily attributed to supply disruptions, creating uncertainty in the market.

Long queues and stock shortages are becoming common at gas stations, with prices in some areas reaching N1,200 per kilogram. In Lagos Mainland, prices jumped from N750/kg to N1,100/kg within a week.

Market vendors blame transportation costs, a weakened Nigerian naira, and scattered storage terminals for the price surge. Citizens are feeling the financial strain, and even businesses like restaurants are increasing menu prices.

Marketers are calling for government intervention to stabilize prices, warning that a 12.5-kilogram cylinder could soon cost N18,000 if left unchecked. There are concerns that rising gas prices may lead to a return to firewood for cooking, with environmental consequences.

The government acknowledges the challenge but notes that the sector is largely deregulated. Efforts are underway to collaborate with the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas Ltd (NLNG) to increase domestic supply and address the price surge. Citizens are anxiously awaiting government action to ensure cooking gas remains affordable.
