Confusion in Anambra as Self-Proclaimed Monarch Frees 10 Inmates from Correctional Centre
Confusion has gripped Anambra State following the reported release of 10 inmates from the Amawbia Correctional Centre near Awka by a self-acclaimed monarch, sparking public outrage and fear of possible unrest.
A viral video shows the man, who identified himself as His Imperial Majesty, Dr. Amb. Prosper Chukwuka Eze, Igbo Gburugburu II (Worldwide) and Eze Omeiheukwu of Nkwelle Awka Ancient Kingdom, ordering the release of the inmates and addressing them in the presence of correctional officers. In the footage, the freed inmates are seen celebrating and hailing the man, while some staff members of the facility appear to be smiling.
According to a report from *The Nation*, the self-styled monarch also promised to “empower” the inmates after their release, a statement that has fueled further controversy and alarm among residents. Many fear that such unauthorized actions could pose security risks to the community.
Under Nigerian law, only the President, state governors, and Chief Judges are empowered to exercise the prerogative of mercy by granting pardons or authorizing inmate releases.
Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service at the Awka Custodial Centre, Mr. Phrank Kez, said, “Yes, I confirm it happened,” but declined to provide further details. When asked what authority the man had to release the inmates, he refused to comment.
Residents have since called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo and security agencies to intervene and investigate the matter, describing the act as an “anomaly” that could lead to chaos if unchecked.
The incident has heightened tension in the state capital, coming just weeks before the November 8 governorship election.
