CNG Truck Caused Abuja Explosion – PCNG Initiative Responds
The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (PCNG) Initiative has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic explosion that occurred on Karu Bridge between Kugbo and Nyanya in the Federal Capital Territory on March 19, 2025. In a statement issued shortly after the incident, the PCNG Initiative extended its condolences to the victims, their families, and everyone affected by the blast.
While early reports pointed to a bi-fueled petrol tanker as the cause, the PCNG Initiative has confirmed that a CNG truck was involved in the explosion. However, the group urged the public to await the results of a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident. Preliminary findings suggest a possible brake failure that may have triggered the explosion of the petrol storage tank, but the group emphasized the importance of avoiding speculation.
Reaffirming its mission, the PCNG Initiative stated that it remains committed to the safe and sustainable use of CNG as a cleaner and more reliable energy source. The initiative pledged to continue working with relevant authorities, including the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Federal Fire Service, and other stakeholders, to enforce safety standards and help prevent future incidents.
The initiative also commended the swift response of emergency services including FEMA, the Nigeria Police Force, and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), who were on the scene conducting rescue operations and managing the aftermath of the explosion.
The statement concluded with the PCNG Initiative’s renewed commitment to public safety and the advancement of cleaner energy alternatives in Nigeria.
