Church Founder Arrested in Calabar for Allegedly Blinding Teenager with Punch
The Cross River State Police Command has arrested David Nyong Okon, a self-proclaimed prophet and founder of The God of A Stainless Hand International and The Land Of Settlement Fellowship, for allegedly assaulting a teenage girl, resulting in the loss of her sight.
Okon, currently in police custody, is accused of punching 19-year-old Godsgift Edem Edet on Saturday, May 31, 2025. The incident reportedly occurred outside The Home restaurant on Obame Ikoya Street, near the Calabar Municipal Council Secretariat. Eyewitnesses say Okon drove recklessly, prompting Edet and her friend to question his behavior. When Edet asked her friend, in their native language, what had happened, the prophet allegedly became enraged and struck her in the face.
Following the assault, bystanders prevented Okon from leaving the scene, demanding he take the injured teenager for medical treatment. After initial delays, he reportedly brought her to a pharmacy on Marian (Ndidem Usang-Iso) Road. When the pharmacy could not manage the injury, he reluctantly transported her to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH). There, he allegedly behaved rudely towards medical staff and subsequently abandoned the victim for two weeks before being apprehended by authorities last weekend.
Sources close to the family say a surgical procedure at UCTH to save Edet’s vision was unsuccessful, and she is now recovering under medical supervision. The case is under investigation by the police.
