Chinua Achebe International Cargo Airport Soars: 4,000 Flights, 250,000 Passengers in Two Years, Declares MD

In a resounding testament to its burgeoning success, the Chinua Achebe International Cargo Airport (CAICA) has achieved remarkable milestones in its first two years of operation. The airport’s Managing Director, Martins Nwafor, revealed in a recent interview that the facility has logged an impressive record of over 4,000 flights and served 250,000 passengers, signaling a positive trajectory for this emerging aviation hub.

CAICA’s success story is characterized by its commitment to public acceptance, system viability, and sustainability. Overcoming initial challenges, the airport has transitioned from operating under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), Category B aircraft, and Category 5 Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Service (ARFFS) to the more robust ARFFS Category 6, enabling the accommodation of Boeing 737-800 and equivalent aircraft.

The journey hasn’t been without obstacles. CAICA faced initial challenges, including incomplete facilities, absence of aircraft refueling companies, and operational fund constraints. Proactive measures were taken to address these issues, with the state governor’s support for critical system calibrations, exemplifying a commitment to overcoming hurdles.

Operational funds, a persistent challenge, have been compounded by duplicative charges from aviation agencies. CAICA is advocating for a review, reduction, or removal of these charges to foster growth and financial sustainability.

Comprehensive security measures have been implemented, with 40 mobile policemen, Civil Defence personnel, DSS operatives, police CIDs, and stringent screening for cab drivers. These efforts ensure the safety of critical infrastructure, passengers, and aircraft.

Beyond being an aviation hub, CAICA has emerged as an economic catalyst, contributing significantly to the local, sub-national, and national economy. The airport has created over 500 direct jobs and significantly boosted economic activities in its vicinity, making a tangible impact on employment.

CAICA’s vision extends beyond its current success. As a cargo airport, the strategic plan focuses on supporting aviation cargo operations. Collaborations with trade associations and warehouses, including the Shippers’ Council of Nigeria, underscore the airport’s commitment to boosting agro-allied businesses and facilitating cargo movements.

In line with the state governor’s economic plan, CAICA is exploring partnerships with Afrexim bank and the establishment of Anambra state export emporium. The airport aspires to be the pioneer green airport in Africa, emphasizing sustainability and environmental consciousness.

Built in adherence to Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations and ICAO standards, CAICA is well-positioned to adapt to the evolving aviation landscape. The airport’s commitment to continuous improvement aligns with industry standards, ensuring its relevance in the dynamic aviation sector.

As CAICA reflects on its achievements and addresses challenges, it stands poised for future growth, playing a crucial role in the economic development of Anambra state and beyond.
