Chinese National Sentenced to Death for Murdering Nigerian Girlfriend in Kano
The Kano State High Court in the north-western region has handed down a death sentence to Geng Quandong, a 47-year-old Chinese national, for the brutal murder of his Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Buhari.
Quandong stood trial for the murder of 23-year-old Buhari, who tragically lost her life on September 16, 2022, at her family residence in Janbulo quarters, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano. The court found Quandong guilty of culpable homicide, a capital offense punishable by death under Section 221 of the Penal Code Law of Kano State.
The prosecution successfully demonstrated Quandong’s culpability beyond a reasonable doubt, leading to his conviction.
The murder of Buhari sparked outrage and condemnation across the nation, particularly within the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) community, as she was serving her mandatory one-year service to Nigeria at the time of her death.
Known affectionately as “Ummita,” Buhari was laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites last Saturday, following her tragic demise. Details emerged during the trial revealing the horrific circumstances of her death. According to Buhari’s mother, Quandong forcibly entered their home, pushing her down before fatally stabbing her daughter in her own room.
