Championing Change: Titi Abubakar’s Unwavering Commitment to Eradicating Human Trafficking, Child Labour
In a recent statement, Mrs. Titi Abubakar, the wife of former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, expressed her dismay at the lack of support for her pet project, the Women Trafficking and Child Labour Eradication Foundation (WOTCLEF). Mrs. Abubakar believes that the primary reason for this lack of support is her marital connection to the prominent politician and business tycoon, Atiku Abubakar.
Despite the challenges she faces, Mrs. Abubakar remains resolute in her commitment to combating the issues of women trafficking and child labor, both in Nigeria and globally. She revealed that for the past 24 years, she has been running WOTCLEF with limited resources, primarily using the stipends provided for her food by her husband.
Mrs. Abubakar’s dedication to her cause was recognized when she was conferred with the Champion 2023 Leadership (Heart of Gold) Award by Champion Newspapers Limited. In her acceptance speech, she expressed her gratitude for the recognition and emphasized her unwavering commitment to the cause.
During the event, Mrs. Abubakar shared her frustration with the lack of financial support for her work. She recounted an incident when she placed an advertisement in a newspaper, appealing for contributions to help the Nigerian children she cares for, and received minimal response. She attributed this lack of support to her association with Atiku Abubakar, saying, “They said after all, I’m Atiku’s wife. It is one thing to be married to Atiku, and it is another thing to have the passion to do what I’m doing.”
Despite these challenges, Mrs. Abubakar praised her dedicated team and emphasized her commitment to serving humanity through her work. She highlighted that her mission to combat human trafficking and child labor was not motivated by personal gain but by a deep passion for making a difference.
In conclusion, Mrs. Titi Abubakar remains undeterred in her mission to eradicate women trafficking and child labour, even in the face of challenges associated with her high-profile marriage. Her dedication and commitment to this cause were recognized through the Champion Newspapers’ Leadership Award, which celebrated her relentless efforts in the fight against these twin evils.
