Catholic Church Faces Internal Strife as Kazakhstan Archbishop Rejects Same-Sex Blessings
In a pivotal moment for the Catholic Church, Archbishop Tomash Peta of Saint Mary in Astana, Kazakhstan, has strongly criticized Pope Francis’s recent endorsement of blessings for same-sex couples.
Pope Francis, signaling a significant shift in Catholic doctrine, granted permission on Monday for priests to show compassion towards queer couples seeking divine favor. The Vatican clarified that such blessings should not mimic marriage rites, emphasizing pastoral charity, patience, and understanding.
Archbishop Peta, along with Auxiliary Bishop Athanasius Schneider, issued a joint statement on Tuesday, denouncing the Pope’s new stance as a “great deception.” Peta explicitly prohibited priests and parishes in his archdiocese from blessing same-sex couples, asserting that it contradicts the Catholic Church’s longstanding doctrine.
The clergymen argued that the Vatican’s directives deviate from the Gospel’s truth and urged Pope Francis to reconsider allowing blessings for couples in “irregular situations” and same-sex unions. They emphasized the need for the Catholic Church to uphold its role as the “pillar and ground of the truth.”
Archbishop Peta cautioned that legitimizing such blessings could lead to “far-reaching and destructive consequences,” accusing the Church, at least in practice, of becoming a “propagandist of gender ideology.”
Pope Francis, who has sought to reform the church since taking office in 2013, faced internal resistance to this move. In 2021, the Vatican ruled against blessing gay marriages, asserting that God “cannot bless sin.” However, just two months ago, the Pope hinted at openness to the idea of blessing same-sex unions.
Archbishop Peta’s public condemnation marks a notable instance of resistance within the Catholic Church to Pope Francis’s ongoing efforts to bring about reforms and inclusivity.
