“Buy Petrol at N1,000 Per Litre or CNG at N200,” Tinubu Tells Nigerians

President Bola Tinubu has announced that motorists will now have the option of purchasing petrol at N1,000 per litre or choosing compressed natural gas (CNG) at N200 per standard cubic meter. This was revealed during a meeting with executives of the Nigerian Independent Petroleum Company (NIPCO) at the State House in Abuja on Tuesday.

The President praised NIPCO’s contributions to the country’s energy transition efforts, particularly its role in supporting the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI). He highlighted the company’s ongoing investment in CNG as a more affordable and cleaner alternative to petrol, which aligns with the administration’s goals for energy security and economic diversification.

Tinubu emphasized the critical role of public-private partnerships in advancing Nigeria’s shift towards cleaner energy sources, noting that CNG offers a significant reduction in fuel costs and environmental impact. “Nigerian motorists can choose to buy petrol at N1,000 per litre or its gas equivalent at N200 per standard cubic meter,” Tinubu stated, adding that incentives have been introduced to encourage commercial drivers to switch to CNG at no conversion cost.

The President also commended NIPCO’s early support of the “Switch to CNG” campaign, which has helped raise public awareness and provided affordable CNG conversion kits ahead of the PCNGI’s official launch. He called on NIPCO to continue expanding CNG infrastructure and support the government’s broader energy sector goals.

Ramesh Kasangra, NIPCO’s Director, expressed gratitude for the government’s support and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to investing in infrastructure to make CNG more widely accessible across the country. He highlighted NIPCO’s longstanding contributions to Nigeria’s energy sector, pledging continued partnership in driving the country’s energy transition forward.
