Burkina Faso Detains Eleven Nigerian Military Officers, Seizes Air Force Aircraft Over Unauthorized Airspace Entry
Burkina Faso’s authorities have detained eleven Nigerian military officers after a Nigerian Air Force C-130 transport aircraft made an unplanned landing in Bobo-Dioulasso on 8 December. Officials from the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) said the plane entered Burkinabe airspace without prior authorization before reporting an emergency that required an immediate descent.
According to the AES statement, the aircraft carried two crew members and nine passengers, all serving personnel of the Nigerian armed forces. After the landing, Burkinabe security officials took the individuals into custody and secured the aircraft pending further investigation.
The AES, which includes Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali, said an inquiry opened by Burkinabe aviation and security services confirmed that no overflight clearance had been requested or granted for the mission. The bloc described the incident as a violation of its airspace and sovereignty, emphasizing that the aircraft’s presence was not documented in regional flight coordination systems.
Authorities said the investigation aims to determine the purpose of the flight, the circumstances that led to the emergency landing, and why the aircraft was operating in the area without communication or authorization. The AES also noted that its three member states have placed their air defense units on maximum alert, citing the need to protect their shared airspace and respond quickly to any further unauthorized incursions.
Burkina Faso has not announced a timeline for concluding the investigation or releasing the detained personnel, and Nigerian authorities have yet to issue a detailed public explanation for the aircraft’s route or status before the emergency landing.
