Buhari’s Death: President Tinubu Issues Fresh Order to VP Shettima
Following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the late leader’s body back to Nigeria.
The order came hours after news broke of President Buhari’s passing in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, after a prolonged illness. In a statement released by the State House, President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Aishat Buhari, the former First Lady.
President Tinubu described Buhari’s death as a national loss, noting the former leader’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic and military history. “Nigeria mourns a patriot who dedicated his life to the service of the nation,” the President said in a message shared through his media adviser.
In honour of the late president, President Tinubu has also ordered all national flags to be flown at half-staff across the country as a mark of respect.
President Buhari served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023 and previously led the country as military head of state between January 1984 and August 1985. His leadership, both in uniform and in civilian life, left a lasting impact on the nation.
Details of funeral arrangements are expected in the coming days.
