British High Commissioner Clarifies Restrictions on Students Bringing Families to UK

British High Commissioner Dr. Richard Montgomery clarified the recent decision limiting international students to only those pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program to bring their dependents with them to the United Kingdom.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Montgomery outlined the rationale behind the policy change, citing the unsustainable strain on universities due to an influx of foreign students bringing their families into Britain.

He elaborated that the surge in dependents was exerting pressure on university resources, particularly accommodation, access to medical services, and schooling, necessitating the implementation of these measures.

Montgomery emphasized that the restrictions do not apply universally, exempting students pursuing long-term research degrees such as PhDs or doctorates. However, those on study visas for undergraduate or short-term master’s programs are affected by the revised regulations.

Highlighting the significant increase in demand for British education, Montgomery disclosed statistics showing a dramatic rise in the number of dependents accompanying foreign students, including a thirty-fold increase from Nigeria alone between 2019 and 2022.

Regarding the impact of the policy on undergraduates, Montgomery indicated that it is too early to assess, as the changes were announced in 2023 and only came into effect earlier this year. He suggested waiting until September 2024 for a clearer understanding.

Montgomery underscored the robust demand for UK education, exemplified by a substantial rise in study visa applications from Nigeria, expressing optimism about sustaining this demand despite potential challenges such as fluctuations in currency value.

In conclusion, Montgomery reiterated the significance of the UK’s higher education sector on the global stage and expressed hope for continued demand while acknowledging the complexities involved in accessing British education.
