Brazilian Newborn Goes Viral After Being Born Holding Mother’s Contraceptive Coil
A baby boy in Brazil has captured global attention after being photographed clutching the contraceptive coil that was meant to prevent his birth.
The child, named Matheus Gabriel, was delivered at Hospital Sagrado Coração de Jesus in Nerópolis, Goiás, to his mother, Queidy Araujo de Oliveira. Queidy had been using an intrauterine device (IUD), commonly known as the copper coil, for nearly two years. The contraceptive method is considered over 99% effective.
Queidy discovered her pregnancy during a routine medical check. Doctors advised against removing the device, warning it could put the pregnancy at risk. Despite complications, including bleeding and partial detachment of the coil, she carried the baby to term.
At delivery, the attending physician, Dr. Natalia Rodrigues, found the IUD and placed it in Matheus’ hand. A photo captured the moment — the newborn gripping the device like a tiny prize.
The image, shared online with the caption “Holding my victory trophy: the IUD that couldn’t handle me!”, quickly went viral, sparking fascination and admiration across social media.
