Boko Haram Threatens to Engulf Nigeria, Warns Zulum Amid Insurgency Crisis
Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, has sounded the alarm about the Boko Haram insurgency, warning that if the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the North-East is not effectively addressed, it could jeopardize the stability of the entire nation.
The governor expressed his deep apprehensions, emphasizing that the continued existence of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps within the Local Government Areas of Borno State poses a severe threat. He stated that these camps serve as potential recruitment grounds for Boko Haram and ISWAP (Islamic State West Africa Province).
“Borno State’s position on the map of Nigeria is of utmost importance to us. We share borders with Chad, Cameroon, and Niger Republic, and our borders are porous. Hence, securing the North-Eastern region is tantamount to safeguarding the entire country,” Governor Zulum declared during a meeting with the reconstituted management board of the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) in Maiduguri.
“While other regions in Nigeria grapple with issues like banditry and kidnapping, our primary concern remains Boko Haram and ISWAP. We must exert control over this situation, not just for the sake of Borno State, but for the entire nation. Borno State is the epicenter of Boko Haram and ISWAP. We must curb their influence to prevent the potential wiping of Nigeria off the map,” he emphasized.
Governor Zulum also expressed his distress over the increasing number of people living in IDP camps, further exacerbating the suffering of the population.
“In 2012, about 3.5 million people were displaced in Borno State. While many have returned, over one million internally displaced people still reside in IDP camps. This has led to issues such as increased prostitution, unregulated procreation, and drug abuse within these camps,” Zulum lamented.
Consequently, he urged the North East Development Commission to collaborate with the state government to phase out these IDP camps, enabling people to regain self-sufficiency and livelihoods.
“Failure to do so may lead many to consider joining ISWAP and Boko Haram. The well-being of those living in IDP camps is a shared concern for us all. We have already closed official camps within Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, and now our goal is to eliminate all IDP camps in the local government areas to ensure lasting peace,” Governor Zulum concluded.
This grave warning by Governor Zulum underscores the critical need to address the Boko Haram insurgency and the humanitarian crisis in the North-East region before it escalates further, posing a nationwide threat.
