Boko Haram IED Kills 21 Mourners In Yobe
At least 21 mourners, including many children and women, lost their lives when a tricycle was targeted by an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by Boko Haram insurgents in Yobe State. The attack occurred in Goni, Mittiri village, near Gumsa town, within the Geidam local government area of the State on Tuesday, leaving a community in mourning and shock.
Initial reports indicate that 18 people were killed instantly as the powerful bomb exploded, causing widespread devastation. An additional three individuals succumbed to their injuries while receiving medical treatment at the General Hospital in Geidam. The attack took place after a separate incident earlier in the week, where some taxpayers were killed. Tragically, these 21 lives were lost shortly after attending the burial of those taxpayers.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the region, and the local population is grappling with the escalating violence perpetrated by Boko Haram. According to sources, Boko Haram has recently intensified its attacks on civilians, farmers, and herders in the area, causing widespread fear and concern among the population.
One source reported, “So far, 21 persons have been confirmed dead, while four people with minor injuries were left in the village. The Jega tricycle was loaded with over 30 people who were picked up to return them to their villages.”
Confirming the tragic incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Yobe State Police Command, DSP Dungus Abdulkareem, stated that 20 persons had been confirmed dead in the Monday attack. The local authorities and security forces are working diligently to address the security challenges posed by Boko Haram and bring those responsible for these heinous acts to justice.
The attack serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing threat posed by Boko Haram in the region and the urgent need for increased security measures to protect innocent civilians. The mourning families and the affected community are left grappling with the profound loss caused by this senseless act of violence.
