Bishop Returns to Church with Eye Patch After Knife Attack, Delivers Passionate Sermon on Freedom of Speech, Religion
In an emotional comeback to the pulpit, Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel of Christ The Good Shepherd Church in Australia donned a white eye patch and held a golden cross as he delivered a stirring sermon defending freedom of speech and religion. This courageous return came just two weeks after a shocking knife attack during a live-streamed sermon.
The bishop’s dramatic appearance and impassioned words captivated the congregation and viewers online. Addressing the gathered crowd, Bishop Emmanuel expressed his pride in being Australian, emphasizing the importance of freedom of speech and religion. “I’m proud to be an Australian, and wherever I go, whenever I travel across the globe, when I come back here, this is home,” he declared.
In his sermon, Bishop Emmanuel honored those who sacrificed their lives for human rights, and he strongly advocated for the protection of freedom of speech and religion for all, regardless of their beliefs. “Every human has a right to freedom of speech and freedom of religion, every human being no matter who that is,” he proclaimed.
The bishop also addressed Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, urging him to uphold the principles of democracy and freedom. “I believe in one thing, and that is the integrity and the identity of the human being,” he said. “This human identity, this human integrity, is a God-given gift, no one else.”
The bishop’s sermon ignited a broader conversation about free speech in Australia following the attack. The violent incident was carried out by a 16-year-old boy during a live-streamed sermon, with footage of the stabbing spreading quickly online.
In response to the attack, Australian eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant ordered the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to take down certain posts commenting on the event. X’s Global Governance Affairs division announced it would challenge the take-down order, defending the right to free speech and expressing concern about global censorship.
Meanwhile, Australian police announced that five teenagers had been charged with terrorism-related offenses in connection with the stabbing of Bishop Emmanuel.
