Binance Executive Files Lawsuit Against Nigerian Authorities Over Detention

Tigran Gambaryan, the detained Binance executive, has taken legal action against Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu and the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), alleging violations of his fundamental rights. Gambaryan, represented by lawyer Olujoke Aliyu from Aluko and Oyebode Law Firm, filed the originating motion seeking various reliefs before Justice Inyang Ekwo.

Accompanying Gambaryan in legal action is Nadeem Anjarwalla, Binance’s Africa regional manager, who escaped custody and filed a separate lawsuit. Both lawsuits, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/356/24 and FHC/ABJ/CS/355/24, target the Office of NSA (ONSA) and EFCC as respondents, seeking similar reliefs.

Gambaryan, a US citizen overseeing financial crime compliance at Binance, asserts that his detention and seizure of his passport violated Section 35 (1) and (4) of the Nigerian Constitution, impinging on his right to personal liberty. He demands immediate release and the return of his passport, alongside an injunction against further detention related to Binance matters. Additionally, he seeks a public apology and full indemnity costs.

In a supporting statement, Gambaryan clarified his visit to Nigeria on February 26, along with Anjarwalla, to discuss Binance-related issues with Nigerian authorities. Despite attending the meeting, both were detained afterward without formal charges.

During the court proceedings, Gambaryan’s legal representation withdrew without specifying reasons, possibly linked to Anjarwalla’s escape. Consequently, Justice Ekwo adjourned the matter for Gambaryan to seek new representation and for respondents to appear in court.

Meanwhile, Anjarwalla’s legal team indicated ongoing communication with the respondents, prompting a request for an extended filing deadline. The judge granted the request, scheduling further proceedings for April 8.
