Banex Plaza Closed for Investigation Following Attack on Soldiers – Nigerian Army
The Nigerian Army has announced the closure of Banex Plaza in Wuse II, Abuja, to facilitate a comprehensive investigation into the recent attack on soldiers by a group of traders at the location.
The incident occurred on Saturday, May 18, 2024, when unarmed soldiers were assaulted by unidentified individuals following a dispute over a phone sale. Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, stated on Tuesday that prompt action by soldiers and police officers on internal security duties prevented the situation from escalating further and rescued the soldiers from potential lynching.
“The soldiers were unarmed, did not engage in any aggression, and posed no threat to anyone. The treatment they received was completely unwarranted and unjustifiable,” Nwachukwu emphasized.
In response to the attack, military authorities convened a meeting with the management of Banex Plaza. They decided to temporarily close the plaza to aid in identifying and apprehending the perpetrators. The goal is to prevent such security threats in the Federal Capital Territory and ensure the safety of military personnel and other security operatives.
“This investigation aims to uncover both the immediate and underlying causes of the incident and ensure the security of the Federal Capital Territory. Such acts of violence against personnel are condemnable and could lead to a breakdown of law and order,” Nwachukwu added.
He urged the public to exercise caution and respect when dealing with military personnel, especially in uniform, and to use established channels to report grievances or misconduct by security personnel.
The army’s statement comes amidst broader concerns about security in the region, following other violent incidents such as the attack in Okuama.
