Aviation Unions Threaten Total Shutdown If May 9 Meeting Fails To Address Demands
Aviation unions have appealed to the Federal Government to ensure that the outcome of the planned meeting with workers and other key players in the sector on May 9 regarding the disagreement over workers welfare are tackled to avoid total shutdown of activities in airports across the country.
In a joint statement signed by the National Union of Air Transport Employees, NUATE and and other organs of the union, the workers said the failure to address their demands may forced them to embark on an indefinite strike.
The unions explained that after the warning strike, all parties involved met virtually on April 20 with the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika and chief executive officers of aviation agencies where they received assurances that the agencies’ buildings in Lagos Airport will not be demolished until adequate arrangements are made for the workers.
Regarding the financial benefits, the aviation workers say that the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission also gave assurance that the processes of approval of all the outstanding Conditions of Service will be concluded at a meeting next Tuesday.
The Unions are hopeful that arrangement with the Federal Government will be firmed up for the liquidation of the arrears accruing from the implementation of minimum wage consequential adjustment for NiMet when they converge.
They commended the Minister, National Assembly Committees on Aviation, agencies and others for the visible efforts made to address the matter.
