Atiku Raises Alarm Over Worsening Insecurity Linked to Poverty, Hunger

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep concern over the rising insecurity and kidnappings in Nigeria, attributing the disturbing trend to the escalating levels of poverty and hunger in the country. Abubakar’s remarks come in the wake of the abduction of six young girls in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on January 5, which has sparked public outrage.

Tragically, one of the abducted sisters, Nabeeha, was reportedly killed by the abductors as a warning to the family for failing to meet their ransom demand of N60 million. This incident underscores the urgency of addressing the deteriorating security situation in the nation.

Taking to his Twitter handle on Monday, Atiku voiced his distress, stating, “It is obvious that the worsening poverty and hunger in the land is escalating the level of kidnapping and insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in Abuja, the federal capital.”

Atiku emphasized the role of government in fulfilling its constitutional duty to protect citizens’ lives and property. He highlighted that the failure to do so creates an environment where criminal elements, including kidnappers, operate freely, endangering the lives of citizens without resistance.

Expressing grief over the recent tragedies, including the murder of 13-year-old Folorunsho Ariyo, Atiku called on authorities to urgently address the dire security situation to restore the trust of the Nigerian people.

In conclusion, Atiku extended his condolences to the bereaved families, offering prayers for comfort and eternal peace for the departed, while urging a swift and effective response to the escalating insecurity in the country.
