Seven people died on Tuesday following a road crash at Elewi-Odo bus stop in the Ibadan North East Local Government Area of Oyo State. Several others were injured in the incident involving multiple vehicles.
The crash occurred along the expressway axis leading toward Ojoo and involved two trailers and two Micra cars.
Confirming the incident, the Oyo State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said rescue operations were carried out immediately at the scene.
The Sector Command explained that the crash was triggered by brake failure, saying:
“Yes, it is true. I just left the scene of the accident. We went there to carry out the rescue. The accident involved two trailers and two Micra vehicles. It was a case of brake failure. One of the trailers was trying to negotiate a turn to its company with a Micra behind, but the trailer behind the Micra lost control and ran over them,” the FRSC official said.
Eyewitnesses gave a similar account, describing how the vehicle from behind lost control and struck the cars ahead.
“The trailer behind the Micra suddenly lost its brake. The one ahead was already negotiating the junction. The truck ran into the Micra and crushed it,” an eyewitness said.
Seven people were confirmed dead at the scene. A woman and her twin children, who sustained injuries in the crash, were rescued and taken to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, for treatment.
The FRSC added that the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Odogbo Cantonment Barracks mortuary.
