The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 15 suspects following the killing of a commercial motorcyclist who was attacked by a mob after residents allegedly mistook him for a bandit amid false reports of an invasion in parts of the state.
In a statement issued on Monday, the command dismissed social media claims that armed bandits had invaded communities including Ibeju-Lekki, Imota and Oke-Afo, describing the reports as false and capable of causing public panic.
Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi said there was no security crisis, coordinated attack or invasion in any part of Lagos State, adding that schools and communities remain safe under ongoing security surveillance.
According to the police, the misinformation contributed to the death of 24-year-old commercial motorcyclist Kulaha Ayuba.
Adebisi said some youths, acting on unverified claims circulating online, allegedly identified Ayuba as a Fulani bandit and attacked him. His motorcycle was reportedly stolen during the incident, while his body was later found in a swamp within the community.
The police confirmed that 15 persons have been arrested in connection with the killing and are currently under investigation.
"The command assures the public that all those found culpable will face the full weight of the law," Adebisi said.
The police also condemned the spread of unverified information, warning that individuals who originate or deliberately circulate false and inflammatory content could face prosecution.
The command said such misinformation could fuel public disorder, ethnic profiling and mob violence.
Lagos Commissioner of Police Tijani Fatai urged residents to remain calm, verify information before sharing it and continue their daily activities without fear.
The incident comes amid heightened public concern over insecurity following recent cases of abduction involving pupils and teachers in Oyo State.
