The Imo State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the death of a 21-year-old Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) student, Christogonus Chinedu Chibuzo, whose body was found under suspicious circumstances on May 30.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, preliminary findings indicate that the deceased, a first-year Cyber Security student and member of the Man O’ War campus organization, was allegedly assaulted after being accused of stealing ₦13,500.
The suspects identified as Benedict Chukwuemeka (21), Gospel Kelechi Ikenna (24), and Anastasia Obioma (21), all students of the university, are currently in police custody.
Investigators say Chibuzo was reportedly restrained and beaten during the incident. He sustained serious injuries and was later taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where medical personnel confirmed him dead.
The Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, ordered an immediate response following a report of the incident, leading to the arrest of the suspects. The police also confirmed that relevant evidence has been gathered, while the victim’s body has been deposited in the morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Owerri for a more detailed investigation. Authorities say all individuals linked to the incident will be identified and questioned as part of ongoing inquiries.
The Command assured the public, the university community, and the family of the deceased that investigations are ongoing and that efforts are being made to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death.
