At least six people, including four National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and a Nigerian Army officer, died in a road crash involving a military vehicle and a commercial bus along the Yola–Song highway in Adamawa State.
The accident occurred near Barikin-Sajo on Wednesday when a military gun truck transporting soldiers collided with a commercial Hummer bus travelling from Kano to Mubi.
According to eyewitnesses, the military vehicle was attempting to overtake another vehicle near a bend when it crossed into the path of the oncoming bus. The collision triggered a fire that engulfed the bus.
Witnesses reported that several victims were trapped inside the burning vehicle. Some accounts put the death toll at 10, although authorities have officially confirmed six fatalities.
An eyewitness said the two vehicles collided at a bend shortly before Barikin-Sajo, after which the bus caught fire almost immediately.
Another witness claimed both vehicles appeared to be travelling at high speed before the crash.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that emergency responders and security personnel were deployed to the scene to evacuate victims and clear the wreckage from the highway.
Police spokesperson SP Suleiman Nguroje said four NYSC members, one soldier and one other passenger were confirmed dead.
According to the police, all five occupants of the Hummer bus died after the vehicle caught fire following the collision. Preliminary identification showed that four of the deceased were serving NYSC members posted to Adamawa State.
The police also confirmed that one military personnel attached to the military vehicle died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
Authorities have not released the identities of the victims, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are ongoing.
The incident adds to concerns over road safety on Nigerian highways, where speeding and unsafe overtaking remain major causes of fatal crashes.
