A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has named businessman Chris Uba as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election following the completion of its nationwide primary process.

The development comes days after a separate faction of the party, led by former Senate President David Mark, elected former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate. Atiku emerged victorious in primaries conducted across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, defeating former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and ex-banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.

At an event in Abuja on Sunday, the Bala Gombe-led faction also presented party flags to 29 governorship candidates drawn from the country's six geopolitical zones.

Speaking at the ceremony, factional National Chairman Bala Gombe said the presidential ticket was zoned to Southern Nigeria in line with the party's commitment to equity, inclusiveness and federal character.

According to him, three aspirants — Bashir Sani, Prince Williams Charles and Chris Uba — initially obtained the party's Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms to contest for the ticket.

Gombe said the party adopted the consensus option provided under the Electoral Act, leading to Uba's emergence after the other aspirants withdrew from the race.

He explained that the decision was taken in the interest of party unity and in compliance with Section 84(2) of the Electoral Act, which recognises consensus as a valid method for selecting party candidates.

As a result, Uba was returned unopposed as the faction's presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
