A court in Zimbabwe has sentenced an 18-year-old man from Gokwe South to 15 years in prison after he was found guilty of raping his 42-year-old aunt during a journey to a nearby village.
The incident occurred on 16 May 2026 at about 5:00 a.m., when both individuals were reportedly heading out together for casual work. According to information released by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the attack took place along the route they were travelling.
Prosecutors told the court that the young man assaulted the woman during the trip, pushing her to the ground and attempting to force himself on her. Although the victim resisted, she was overpowered.
The assault was interrupted when a passerby heard distress calls coming from nearby bushes and moved toward the scene. The witness intervened, stopping the attack and assisting the woman to safety before ensuring the matter was reported to the police.
Police later arrested the suspect following a formal complaint, and he was taken through trial proceedings that led to his conviction.
In its statement, the prosecution authority confirmed that the court found him guilty and imposed an effective 15-year custodial sentence.
The National Prosecuting Authority has restated its commitment to pursuing sexual offence cases, adding that perpetrators will face the full weight of the law. It also encouraged members of the public to report such incidents promptly to help ensure timely investigation and prosecution.
