Argentina’s President Javier Milei Takes Swift Action: Cuts Government Fleet in Half, Sells Private Jets to Tackle Economic Challenges

In a move to address Argentina’s economic challenges, President Javier Milei has undertaken measures to cut government expenses, demonstrating his commitment to fiscal responsibility. The recent actions include the sale of two national private jets and a 50% reduction in the number of official vehicles and drivers, with anticipated annual savings of $3 billion.

The decision, announced by presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni on Friday, aims to counter Argentina’s staggering 3,678% annual inflation rate, as predicted by Minister of Economy Luis Toto Caputo.

“Talking about 15,000% inflation is frightening for everyone, and that is what we are working on,” stated Adorni during a press briefing. “It is good to understand that today inflation is running at around 3,678% per year; this one percent of daily inflation leaves us immersed in hyperinflation that we are trying to avoid.”

The two aircraft sold off belonged to YPF, a government-owned oil and gas company, and were identified as being “used almost exclusively by privileged” statesmen, according to Mercopress, quoting Mr. Adorni.

Addressing reporters, Adorni emphasized the government’s commitment to ending privileges, stating, “One of the great objectives we have as a government is to put an end to privileges. The adjustment we intend to make on political expenses, only in operating expenses, is around US$ 3 billion per year.”

President Milei further showcased his commitment to financial prudence by raffling off his last salary as a lawmaker, fulfilling a political vow to donate his monthly remuneration.

“This is the last draw for my salary as a deputy because I now got myself another job,” remarked the 53-year-old Argentine president during an Instagram live session.

President Milei’s decisive actions reflect a determination to navigate Argentina through challenging economic times while prioritizing responsible fiscal management.
