APC Senator Calls for Privatization of Kaduna, Port Harcourt, Warri Refineries, Gives Reasons

Senator Sani Musa, representing Niger East, has urged the Nigerian federal government to consider privatizing its underperforming oil refineries located in Kaduna, Port Harcourt, and Warri. The senator’s proposal aims to address the increasing petroleum prices resulting from the removal of fuel subsidies.

Speaking to reporters over the weekend on the occasion of Nigeria’s 63rd independence anniversary, Senator Musa emphasized the need for reform in the nation’s refining sector. He expressed his candid advice, stating, “For me, my candid advice to the federal government on the nation’s apparently moribund oil refineries is for them to be privatized.”

The senator further suggested that the proceeds generated from the privatization of these refineries should be strategically invested in the mining sector. This, he believes, would facilitate job creation opportunities, particularly for the vast population of Nigerian youth currently grappling with unemployment and economic challenges.

Senator Musa’s call for refinery privatization aligns with ongoing discussions about reforming Nigeria’s energy sector to enhance efficiency and reduce the nation’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products. The senator’s proposal is expected to stimulate further debates and considerations within the government as it grapples with the challenges of fuel pricing and energy sustainability.
