APC Faction: “Call for Emergency Rule in Rivers State Unnecessary, Illogical, and Unpatriotic”

The faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, aligned with former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, has condemned the call for a state of emergency in the state. This demand, made by the Chief Tony Okocha-led caretaker committee, was described as unnecessary, illogical, and unpatriotic by the pro-Amaechi faction.

Darlington Nwauju, the spokesman for the group, emphasized that the APC in Rivers State did not convene any meeting or consultation to endorse such a call. “My attention has been drawn to an address today (Wednesday) June 19, 2024, by those parading themselves as caretaker committee members of the APC in Rivers State demanding for a declaration of ‘State of Emergency’ in Rivers State,” Nwauju stated in Port Harcourt.

He clarified that the party’s members across the state’s 390 wards were not consulted and did not support this approach. Nwauju dismissed the call as baseless, stating, “There were no such consultations; there were no such meetings, and so it cannot stand as the aggregate opinion of members of the APC across the 390 wards in Rivers State.”

Highlighting the critical economic role of Rivers State in Nigeria, Nwauju urged for caution in handling political issues. “Rivers State must have other means to settle these political issues,” he said, expressing hope for the return of peace across the state.

The pro-Amaechi faction firmly believes that stirring up unrest is detrimental to the state’s interests at this critical time.
