Another Federal Lawmaker Dumps Labour Party, Set to Join APC

A fresh wave of defections has hit the Labour Party as a member of the House of Representatives, Nkemkanma Kama, representing Ohaozara, Onicha, and Ivo Federal Constituency of Ebonyi State, has officially announced his resignation from the party.

In a letter dated July 16, 2025, and addressed to the Labour Party Ward Chairman in Amaeze Ward, Ishiagu, Kama explained that his decision came after “extensive consultations with my immediate family, political associates, and well-wishers.” The letter surfaced on social media on Tuesday, sparking intense speculation about his next political destination.

Kama, who secured his mandate during the last general elections on the platform of the Labour Party, expressed deep appreciation to the party leadership and members for their support, noting that their trust had been pivotal to his victory. He commended the party for its role in advancing democratic ideals and promoting the welfare of his constituency, but stressed that stepping down was in the best interest of his people.

“After careful consideration, I have come to the conclusion that this step is necessary for the greater good of our people. My commitment to service, development, and the upliftment of our constituency remains unwavering,” he wrote.

Although the lawmaker did not confirm his next move, political analysts in Ebonyi believe he is on the verge of joining the All Progressives Congress (APC). Governor Francis Nwifuru had last December, during a community empowerment program in Ishiagu, openly urged Kama to defect. Similarly, APC’s state chairman, Stanley Emegha, alongside other stakeholders, has repeatedly wooed him at public events.

Kama reassured his supporters that his decision would not derail his dedication to service, pledging to continue championing development and progress regardless of party affiliation.
