Anglican Diocese Suspends Popular Anambra Priest Over Alleged Staged Prophecies
The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Diocese on the Niger, has suspended Reverend Ifunanya Maduka following allegations that he engaged in staged prophetic activities.
In a letter dated April 27, 2026, the Bishop on the Niger, Owen Nwokolo, announced Maduka’s suspension as Vicar of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Nteje, Anambra State. The suspension will last six months and is without pay.
According to the Diocese, the decision was based on “credible and verifiable reports” that the priest allegedly orchestrated prophetic displays by involving individuals he is said to have induced or paid, presenting the events as genuine spiritual revelations.
The letter stated that Maduka admitted to the allegations after being confronted with the evidence.
Church authorities described the actions as inconsistent with the responsibilities of an ordained priest, raising concerns about false prophecy, deception of congregants, and conduct that could be interpreted as financial exploitation.
The Diocese said the incident violates Anglican doctrine, clerical discipline, and ethical standards, adding that it has negatively affected the Church’s reputation.
As part of the disciplinary measures, Maduka has been instructed to hand over all church property and responsibilities to the People’s Warden and vacate the church premises within four days.
The Diocese also confirmed that a disciplinary panel will be set up within one month to further examine the case and determine whether additional sanctions are necessary.
