Anambra’s Battle Against Insecurity: Monday Sit-at-Home Persists Despite Government Efforts
As Governor Prof Chukwuma Soludo approaches his second anniversary in office on March 17, 2024, security challenges continue to loom large over Anambra State. The issue traces its roots back to the secessionist activities that emerged during the second term of Soludo’s predecessor, Chief Willie Obiano.
In 2020, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) initiated the Monday sit-at-home as a form of civil disobedience, protesting the arrest of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Despite IPOB officially calling off the exercise in 2021, a splinter group led by separatist leader Simon Ekpa has sustained the initiative, impacting the economy of the entire South-East.
Governor Soludo’s administration has grappled with this challenge, urging citizens through the state-owned radio station to resume normal activities on Mondays. Security agencies, including the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), have intensified efforts to ensure the safety of residents.
Recent developments indicate the lifting of curfews in certain areas, with the Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, urging citizens to be law-abiding and report any criminal activities promptly. The NSCDC has deployed personnel to safeguard critical infrastructure, encouraging the public to report suspicious activities.
Despite these efforts, a visit to Awka, the state capital, reveals that many businesses remain deserted on Mondays. Financial institutions, in particular, have been cautious in adhering to the state government’s directives due to security concerns, with banks opting for a centralized approach pending instructions from their head offices.
The persisting Monday sit-at-home has not only impacted the economy but also sparked debates on whether the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu could restore peace in the region. Some argue that his freedom might bring stability, while others express concerns about the rise of rival separatist leader Simon Ekpa, who continues to defy Kanu’s orders, potentially creating further unrest in the future.
