Anambra: Umuada Flog Young Woman Publicly for Beating Brother’s Wife, Enabling Domestic Abuse

Members of the Umuada, a traditional women’s group made up of daughters of a lineage, have publicly flogged a young woman in Ukpor, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, over allegations that she assaulted her brother’s wife and actively enabled prolonged domestic abuse in the marriage.

The incident occurred in the early hours of the day following an emergency meeting convened by the Umuada after complaints were raised about persistent violence in the household. An eyewitness, Nwanya Chiamaka Esther, said the marriage had been marked by repeated physical abuse, allegedly carried out by the husband with the support of his sister and their mother.

According to Esther, the sister was accused of joining her brother during assaults on his wife, while their mother allegedly encouraged the attacks and was involved in separate acts of violence against the woman. The situation reportedly escalated after the sister allegedly threatened the leader of the Umuada with a machete and sent a message dismissing the authority of the women’s group.

In response, the Umuada mobilised and stormed the family’s residence early in the morning, catching the household off guard. The young woman accused of beating her brother’s wife was flogged publicly as a form of traditional punishment.

The mother-in-law was fined and issued a stern warning over allegations that she had bitten her daughter-in-law during a previous altercation. The husband, identified as the primary perpetrator of the abuse, was later handed over to the men of the community for further disciplinary action in line with local customs.

Esther, who said she was among the women summoned for the emergency meeting, explained that many participants were initially unaware of the purpose of the gathering. She stated that after the intervention, the sister was compelled to sign an undertaking pledging never to raise her hand against the woman again. Similar assurances were reportedly demanded to ensure an end to the abuse.
