“Anambra Is Not a Christian State” – Odinani Practitioners Challenge Soludo’s Declaration

Indigenous spirituality practitioners in Anambra State have strongly criticized Governor Chukwuma Soludo over his recent remarks labeling them as idol worshippers. The group, known as Ndi Odinani, described the statement as a cultural misstep and a fallacious generalization that unfairly portrays their belief system.

In an open letter addressed to the governor and shared with journalists, the group argued that Soludo’s assertion that Anambra is a “Christian state” is historically and constitutionally inaccurate. They emphasized that Christianity was introduced to the region in 1857 during colonial rule, whereas Odinani, the indigenous spiritual tradition of the Igbo people, has deep ancestral roots in the land.

The letter, signed by Izuorah Nnamdi, Director of Lomat Global Resources Limited, warned that declaring Anambra a Christian state disregards the indigenous identity of its people. They pointed out that while Christianity is now widespread, it remains an adopted faith rather than the original spiritual heritage of the Igbo people. They urged Soludo to uphold religious neutrality, as mandated by the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, which guarantees freedom of religion and prohibits the elevation of one faith over others.

The practitioners also addressed the governor’s criticism of traditional sacrifices at road junctions and water bodies. They explained that these rituals hold significant cultural and spiritual importance within Igbo cosmology and proposed constructive dialogue with traditional custodians to establish guidelines that balance cultural preservation with public order.

Calling for inclusivity in governance, the group urged Soludo to lead with fairness and respect for Anambra’s diverse spiritual landscape. They stressed that democracy thrives on justice and inclusivity, urging the governor to uphold the constitutional rights of all religious groups in the state.
