Anambra Guber: INEC Extends Voter Registration, Shares Update on Election Preparations
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a three-day extension of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in Anambra State ahead of the off-cycle governorship election. The extension, confirmed after the Commission’s regular weekly meeting on Thursday, follows appeals from citizens seeking additional time to register.
INEC reported a strong turnout and peaceful conduct of the CVR exercise across all 326 registration centres in the state. As of Wednesday, 16th July 2025, a total of 96,085 new voters had successfully registered in just nine days—an average of over 10,600 registrations per day. In addition, 12,595 voters applied for transfers of their registration either within or outside the state, while 7,061 individuals requested updates to their records or replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
Originally scheduled to conclude on Thursday, the registration will now end on Sunday, 20th July 2025. According to National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information & Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, the next step will involve displaying the voter register for public scrutiny in accordance with legal provisions. This will be followed by a clean-up of the data using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).
INEC also provided early demographic insights, revealing that 58% of the new registrants—56,017 individuals—are female, while 52.48% (50,429 individuals) are young people aged between 18 and 34. A detailed breakdown by age, gender, occupation, and disability status will be released once data verification is complete.
