Anambra Government Shuts Down 30 Health Facilities Over Quackery Concerns
The Anambra State government announced on Friday the closure of over 30 illegal health facilities run by unqualified individuals in a move to protect public health. This announcement was made by the state Commissioner for Health, Afam Obidike, during the 2024 annual general meeting and scientific conference of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Anambra State chapter, which included the fifth Festus Nwako memorial lecture.
Commissioner Obidike highlighted the state’s commitment to combating quackery, revealing that many of the shuttered facilities were operated by non-medical personnel. He noted that these unlicensed practitioners were performing surgeries and other medical procedures, posing significant risks to the health and lives of residents.
“These quacks were making so much money because they do not have conscience. They were carrying out surgeries and toying with the health and lives of our people,” Obidike stated.
The crackdown is part of the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s broader efforts to improve healthcare delivery in Anambra. The State Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency was established to tackle quackery and ensure that all health services provided are by qualified professionals.
Commissioner Obidike called on the NMA to collaborate with the state government to eradicate illegal medical practices, which he said are vital for saving lives and increasing life expectancy in the region.
In addition to addressing quackery, the Anambra government is focused on enhancing healthcare infrastructure. Efforts include the construction, renovation, and equipping of public hospitals, along with the recruitment of health workers to improve access to medical services across the state.
