Anambra 2025: “There Is No Iota of Truth in the Rumour” — Moghalu Dismisses LP-ADC Merger Talks, Says Coalition Only for 2027
Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate for the November 8, 2025 election in Anambra State, Dr. George Moghalu, has denied reports of a merger between the LP and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the claims as unfounded and politically motivated.
Speaking in Awka on Tuesday during the official inauguration of the George Moghalu/Ifeoma Okaro Campaign Council, Moghalu said the rumour was being spread by political opponents who feel threatened by the growing popularity of the Labour Party in the state. He clarified that while coalition talks may be on the table for the 2027 general elections, they have no relevance to the upcoming Anambra poll.
“There is no iota of truth in the rumour. It is being circulated by those threatened by the strength, popularity, and acceptability of LP in Anambra State,” he said. He compared the current speculation to earlier false claims about LP national leader Peter Obi allegedly leaving the party, which Obi has since publicly denied. “When the propaganda first started that our leader, Peter Obi, had left the Labour Party, he came out to debunk it. He assured us of his support and even promised to attend our campaign rally in Onitsha this Friday,” Moghalu added.
Addressing the challenges ahead, the former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) acknowledged that defeating an incumbent government would not be easy, but expressed confidence in the party’s readiness. “This election is not a tea party. Removing an incumbent, even the lame one we have now, is not an easy task—but it has happened before, both here in Anambra and elsewhere,” he said.
Moghalu urged campaign council members to prioritise grassroots mobilisation, stressing that victory will depend on winning at the polling unit level. “Elections are won at the polling units, not in state capitals. That is where our real strength will be tested. I’m happy you have accepted to work with me, not for me, because we are all stakeholders in this project,” he said.
Campaign Council Director General, Okey Chukwuogo, expressed optimism that with unity and hard work, Moghalu would emerge victorious. LP State Chairman, Ugochukwu Emeh, also addressed the newly inaugurated members, noting that while no one is perfect, selections were made based on capacity and credibility. “Our candidate is spiritually, physically, and financially prepared for this contest. This journey demands maturity and focus—there is no room for bitterness or ego. The task is simple: deliver,” he charged.
The inauguration of the campaign council signals a significant step in the Labour Party’s preparations as it sets its sights on unseating the ruling administration in Anambra.
