Alleged Terrorism Financing: Police Interrogates Ajaero Today
The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, is set to appear before the Nigeria Police today for questioning in connection with allegations of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.
Ajaero’s appearance follows a formal police invitation issued on August 19, 2024. He is expected to arrive at the IRT Complex, Old Abattoir near Guzape Junction, Abuja, at 10 a.m., accompanied by other labour leaders and NLC legal representatives.
This development has sparked significant concern among both national and international civil rights organizations, who worry about the broader implications for workers’ rights and civil liberties in Nigeria.
In response to the police’s invitation, the NLC has warned of a potential nationwide strike should Ajaero be detained.
NLC’s head of information and public affairs, Comrade Benson Upah, urged the police to act within the bounds of the law during the questioning. He highlighted the delicate nature of the situation, noting that the police’s conduct could either defuse or heighten tensions between the government and organized labour.
“Ajaero will appear today; it depends on what the police do. I’m hoping that the police, as a responsible organisation, conduct themselves well,” Upah stated in an interview
The outcome of today’s proceedings could have far-reaching consequences for the relationship between the Nigerian government and the labour movement.
