A’Ibom LG Poll: PDP Dominates with 30 Chairmanship Wins; APC Claims One
In a decisive victory during Saturday’s local government council elections in Akwa Ibom, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) secured 30 out of 31 chairmanship positions, solidifying its status as the ruling party in the state. The only exception was in Essien Udim Local Government Area, where All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Usoro Effiong emerged victorious as Chairman.
The results were officially announced by Aniedi Ikoiwak, Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission, in a signed statement released from Uyo on Sunday.
The elections covered 31 local government areas and 369 wards across the state, marking a significant step in compliance with a recent Supreme Court ruling that prohibits caretaker committees from overseeing local councils. This ruling has prompted several state governments to conduct local elections to establish legitimate leadership.
While the PDP dominated in Akwa Ibom, the situation was different in Rivers State, where the African People’s Party (APP) made a significant impact, winning the majority of chairmanship and councilorship seats. This shift follows a directive from Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara, a member of the PDP, encouraging his supporters to contest on the APP platform due to internal party conflicts with former PDP leader Nyesom Wike, now the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

With what we witnessed in River State, I honestly agree that election is better without the police. That would leave no options for intimidation and harassment, and no sensible party would come with thugs, knowing that other parties are ready for any eventuality in any polling unit.
