Age Fraud Scandal Shakes Cameroon Squad in AFCON 2023: Youngest Player Douala Faces Suspension
Wilfried Nathan Douala, the youngest player in Cameroon’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 squad, is at the center of controversy as he is among 62 players facing suspension for alleged age fraud.
Despite Douala’s limited international experience and Victoria United status in Cameroon’s first division, his inclusion in the AFCON squad earlier this year raised eyebrows. The registration listed his birthday as May 15, 2006, making him the tournament’s youngest player at just 17 years old.
However, Douala’s age credentials have now come under scrutiny, and he faces suspension after being named on a 62-man list accused of falsifying their ages by the Cameroonian Football Federation.
This scandal goes beyond Douala, as 15 clubs in Cameroon have at least one player suspended for age fraud, highlighting the widespread nature of the issue.
Despite not making any appearances during AFCON, Douala was frequently spotted dancing with teammates on the way to the dressing room.
This is not the first time Cameroon has grappled with age fraud allegations. Last year, 21 members of the country’s 30-player squad failed age tests ahead of the Under-17 AFCON tournament in Algeria.
In response to the recurring problem, Samuel Eto’o, president of Cameroon’s football governing body, has mandated age tests for every player to “put an end to the tampering with civil status records which have, in the past, tarnished the image of Cameroon football.” These tests involve MRI scans of the wrist to assess bone fusion, aiming to ensure the accuracy of players’ ages and uphold the integrity of the sport.
