Again, Suspected Herdsmen Launch Deadly Night Attack in Benue Community; Many Feared Dead
Yelewata community in Benue State was thrown into mourning late Friday night following a deadly attack by suspected armed herdsmen. The assault, which began around 10:00 pm, claimed multiple lives and left many others injured.
Preliminary reports received by early Saturday morning indicated that at least 16 people sustained various injuries during the attack. The exact number of fatalities remains unclear as authorities continue to assess the situation and gather information from the scene.
Security forces responding to a distress call, including personnel from the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), were ambushed in Daudu while heading to the troubled area. The ambush resulted in the deaths of two soldiers and one Civil Defence officer.
“These brave men paid the ultimate price in service to our people. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten,” said a local source, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of the security personnel.
Survivors of the attack are currently receiving medical treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) in Makurdi, where medical staff have issued an urgent appeal for blood donations to help save lives. Residents and humanitarian organizations are being called upon to provide immediate support through medical aid and donations.
A concerned community member offered condolences to the families affected, especially the families of the fallen security operatives. They also urged others to refrain from circulating graphic images of the scene, citing respect for the victims and the dignity of the grieving community.
