African Catholics Exempted from Same-Sex Marriage Blessings, Declares Pope Francis

Pope Francis has declared that African Catholics are exempted from blessing same-sex marriages due to cultural considerations, labeling them a “special case.” In an interview with Italian newspaper La Stampa, the Pope stated that the cultural viewpoint in Africa does not tolerate homosexuality, and those who vehemently protest belong to small ideological groups.

Despite this exemption, Pope Francis expressed hope that the broader acceptance of the idea of blessing same-sex marriage, as outlined in the “Fiducia supplicans” declaration from the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, would gradually prevail. He emphasized that the declaration aims to include rather than divide, inviting everyone to welcome and entrust people to God.

The Pope’s position follows the controversy surrounding “Fiducia supplicans,” a Vatican document permitting blessings for same-sex marriages. When asked about the possibility of a schism within the Catholic Church due to opposing views, Pope Francis dismissed the notion, stating that small groups expressing schismatic reflections have always existed, and they should be allowed to express themselves while the church looks forward.

In December, Pope Francis announced that priests can now bless same-sex relationships as part of the church’s efforts to be more inclusive to LGBTQ community members. Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez endorsed the new declaration, clarifying that such blessings do not seek to amend the traditional doctrine of the church about marriage.
