“ADC Must Avoid Another Wike Scenario Ahead of 2027” — Dele Momodu
A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has warned the party leadership to assert internal discipline to prevent divisions within the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Momodu’s warning follows rising pressure from supporters and allies of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, who are demanding that the ADC present him as its presidential candidate. Those pushing the demand include Prof. Pat Utomi and activist Aisha Yesufu, both of whom have taken firm public positions on Obi’s role within the coalition.
Utomi has threatened to disengage from the coalition if Obi is offered a vice-presidential slot, while Yesufu has vowed to oppose him should he emerge as a running mate rather than the presidential flagbearer.
In an article published on his verified X account and titled *“My Candid Advice to ADC: Avoid Another Wike Scenario,”* Momodu cautioned the party against allowing individuals or groups to impose their will on the platform.
He recalled attending a meeting in Abuja last year where opposition figures agreed to adopt the ADC as a vehicle to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), stressing that joining the coalition was a voluntary decision.
According to Momodu, participants at the meeting were assured that the ADC would operate as an open and democratic party, where no individual or group would be allowed to destabilise the structure. He said those assurances gave him confidence, particularly with former Senate President David Mark serving as chairman.
Momodu, however, expressed concern that recent actions by some groups have introduced hostility into what he described as a fragile political cooperation.
He questioned how a coalition could function if certain blocs insist on producing the presidential candidate without a transparent process, warning that such an approach could undermine unity.
Drawing parallels with past internal crises in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Momodu urged the ADC leadership to act decisively, warning that failure to do so could weaken the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
