Activist Demands Justice After Man Beaten to Death for Allegedly Sleeping with “Married Woman” in Delta State
A 43-year-old man, Erhieyove Erhiga Matthew, was beaten to death in Delta State after being accused of allegedly sleeping with a married woman, prompting calls for justice from activist Joe Isreal. The incident reportedly occurred in Okoroke-Ovu, Ethiope East Local Government Area, on October 28.
According to Isreal, the woman involved had been separated from her husband, Onoriode Efferunu, for more than a year. The separation followed domestic violence and irreconcilable differences, and she has four children with Efferunu. Isreal claims that the estranged husband publicly warned that any man seen with her would face serious consequences.
Isreal alleged that Efferunu orchestrated the attack on Matthew, who was confronted by local youths in the community. Despite attempts to assert his innocence, Matthew was tied, beaten, and handed over to local elders who reportedly failed to intervene. The assault left Matthew severely injured, and he later died at the hospital.
The woman has publicly denied any relationship with Matthew, emphasizing that her estranged husband’s actions were motivated by control rather than fact. Isreal stated that a video documenting the attack would soon be released to show the brutality inflicted on Matthew, describing the treatment as inhumane.
The activist also highlighted the role of local authorities and elders, calling for a thorough investigation and accountability for those who failed to prevent the attack. He noted that Efferunu’s lawyer is currently at the State Command headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force in Asaba, seeking bail for those arrested in connection with the incident.
