Abia State Assembly Passes Bill to Cease Pension for Former Governors, Deputies

The Abia State House of Assembly has unanimously passed a bill aimed at discontinuing the payment of pensions to former governors and their deputies within the state. Sponsored by Uchanna Okoro, the Majority Leader representing Arochukwu State Constituency, the bill titled “A Bill (H.A.B 11:) for a Law to Revoke The Abia State Governors and Deputy Governors Pensions Law No 4 of 2001 and for other Matters connected therewith” marks a pivotal shift in governance policy.

Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa declared the passage of the bill following meticulous deliberations, including its readings, consideration at the committee level, and final approval during the day’s plenary session. Commending the assembly members on the historic achievement, Speaker Emeruwa highlighted the bill’s overarching objective to curtail governance expenses and reallocate resources towards developmental initiatives.

Upon the governor’s assent, the bill will officially become the “Abia State Governors and Deputy Governors (Repeal) Law 2024,” signaling a definitive end to pension benefits for former state executives. Notably, the legislation is set to take immediate effect upon gubernatorial approval, marking a swift transition in state policy.

With the enactment of this bill, former governors and deputies will no longer be entitled to pension benefits upon the expiration of their tenures. The move comes amidst longstanding controversies surrounding the exorbitant perks and privileges afforded to former state executives, sparking debates nationwide.

While some states have taken steps to repeal similar laws, others have been criticized for their reluctance to address the issue. The Abia State Assembly’s decisive action sets a precedent for fiscal responsibility and accountability in governance, signaling a progressive shift towards prioritizing public welfare and development.
