Abia Governor Otti Signs Bill to Cancel Pension for Ex-Governors, Deputies

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has enacted the Abia State of Nigeria Governors and Deputy Governors Pension Repeal Bill of 2024, marking a significant stride towards promoting good governance and fiscal responsibility in the state.

Speaking in Nvosi after signing the bill into law, Governor Otti emphasized the importance of leadership as stewardship rather than an avenue for personal gain. He lauded the Abia House of Assembly for their prompt handling of the bill and praised the collaborative spirit between the legislative and executive branches of the government, underscoring their shared commitment to serving the people of Abia.

Governor Otti articulated that the decision to revoke pension payments to former officeholders reflects a commitment to prioritize public welfare over individual entitlements. He expressed dissatisfaction with past administrations’ allocation of state funds, highlighting the need to redirect resources towards initiatives that directly benefit citizens.

Addressing concerns about the impact of the law on pensioners, Otti emphasized that those in need should be the primary recipients of financial assistance, rather than former officeholders. He recounted engagements with individuals affected by the repeal, noting that many recognized the necessity of the decision.

The Speaker of the Abia House of Assembly, Emmanuel Emereuwa, hailed the enactment of the bill as a pivotal moment in the state’s governance. He affirmed that the legislation would nullify the Abia State Governors’ and Deputy Governors’ Law no 4 of 2001, signaling a departure from past practices.

In conclusion, Attorney General Ikechukwu Uwanna applauded Governor Otti’s bold action and reiterated the alignment of the government’s actions with the will of the people. He extended gratitude to the House of Assembly for their collaborative efforts in advancing the state’s transformation agenda.
