Abia Governor Issues Apology for Pension Arrears Delay, Commits to New Payment Deadline

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has issued a public apology for the delay in clearing accumulated pension arrears, a promise he made during his campaign. The governor, speaking during a state-wide broadcast to mark the New Year, acknowledged his failure to meet the earlier deadline set for the end of 2023.

Otti explained that unforeseen challenges arose during the digital verification of pensioners, revealing a total amount required for payment that exceeded initial projections. He assured citizens that the funds would be arranged and the arrears settled before the close of the first quarter of 2024, even if seeking approvals from the Abia House of Assembly becomes necessary.

In addition to addressing pension concerns, Governor Otti hinted at an imminent upward review of workers’ salaries in the state. He affirmed the administration’s commitment to fulfilling this promise, stating that the final stages of the salary review process were underway.

Describing 2023 as a “watershed moment” in the state’s political history, Otti expressed confidence in consolidating gains made during the past seven months. The governor outlined plans for 2024, emphasizing the integration of technology to digitize public institutions, enhance service delivery, and boost human capital development and job creation.

Governor Otti revealed intentions to establish the Abia Global Economic Advisory Board, comprising internationally recognized experts. This board aims to position the state as a preferred investment destination, leveraging global expertise for economic growth and development.
